He has been working on a very interesting experimental design which features an elongated Northwoods style grip with asymmetrical notches for the grip thumb.






Jonas' creative design looks to have alternating Battenkill grips to allow for a more comfortable angle when using this lateral grip style. Here's a pic from his blog post demonstrating the grip position. It looks quite comfortable to my eyes.

Some Cree paddles have an indented paddle blade reminiscent of this style. Also, in the Historic Paddle Art archive page, is an undated image featuring a French trade canoe and a paddle with similar curves (original post here). I wish there were more details about this print in order to find any tribal affiliation, if any.

Zingaro was built of aluminum by Derecktor Shipyard of Mamaroneck, New York and launched in 2001.

It is interesting that the owner's cabin is located amidships, where the pitching motion is much reduced than if located against the after bulkhead which is the generally accepted location.

In a small bay on the north shore of Long Island there is a quaint yacht club named the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. And from this club sail 13 one design racing yachts, the first design commission of Sparkman & Stephens. Designed in 1928, she was Olin Stephens' first professional work, at age 20.

There's a great article from the 1996 September/October issue of Wooden Boat magazine and they recite a quote from Olin Stephens from 1928 as follows: "In any design, the most important factors of speed seem to be long sailing lines and large sail area, with moderate displacement and small wetted surface. Then comes beauty, by which is meant clean, fair, pleasing lines. Though per se beauty is not a factor of speed, the easiest boats to look at seem the easiest to drive". This is a fine example of these concepts.

Here is how it came to be: In 1928 the Junior Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound solicited designs for a new class of boats for sail training young sailors. The broker Drake Sparkman asked young Olin if he wanted to try his hand at a design, knowing Olin from Larchmont Yacht Club and knowing he was a budding designer. Olin accepted the invitation and the firm was born, October 28, 1929.

Adventuress was built by Norman H. Hodgdon, Jr. of Boothbay Harbor, Maine. She was penned by the talented Francis Kinney when he was with Sparkman & Stephens and launched in 1958. Construction is as typical: oak structure and single planked in mahogany. Fastenings are of Everdur.


The design is a descendant of the Gulf Stream 30 (design #1147), with a longer bow overhang and deeper draft.

Sirocco was built by Taylor of Hobart, Tasmania and launched in 1938. She was built for the then vice-commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. Here's a newspaper clipping from the day of her launch.


Here are the plans. I will draw your attention the fact both the Sail Plan and Construction Plan were drawn by Rod Stephens. The Construction Plan is probably the most detailed plan I have seen from Rod's hand. Also note the mention of a very early feathering propeller.
