Cottage Life Canoe Paddle

The headquarters of Cottage Life Magazine are located nearby my wife's workplace. Knowing as she does of my paddle hobby, she noticed a giant ottertail paddle on display of their main facade and thought it may be of interest. The weathered paddle has blended in with the reddish tone of the brick, but it's a nice decoration, nontheless. Here's a shot...

Using some measurement tools in photoshop and extrapolating from the dimensions of the doorway height, I estimated the paddle to be around 115" (just over 9.5 feet) long with a 52" long x 12" wide blade. Huge!

Can you study charts and also the stars, or will you only want the most effective in electronic navigation? When you happen to be on your boat, do you plan to leave civilization behind, or will you want telephone or e-mail speak to? Do you have a preferred marine electronics brand, or would you rather just choose the very best from several various brands? Know yourself, your boating plans, as well as your common attitude toward electronic gadgetry, and you'll have an less complicated time picking the way to outfit your boat.

Selecting one of the most suitable boating electronics can not just make your boating experiences more entertaining as well as your fishing a lot more productive, but it could be essential for your well becoming too in the event of an emergency. Choosing the best gear is the very first step, but understanding to make use of it correctly is equally as crucial. In addition to, you should understand how to navigate by other signifies within the occasion of your electronics failing. Finding out the best way to use navigational charts and plot your course continues to be a necessary ability. That getting said, here are some guidelines to help you select your electronics.

1. The boat electronics you must pick should be an automatic identification system, or AIS. It really is employed by boats and by the Vessel Site visitors Services to discover and identify boats. Your AIS gear is the most significant electronic device you'll purchase. It enables vessels to exchange electronic information including position, identification, and course. The AIS transponder will trigger your vessel to show up on pc screens at Vessel Targeted traffic Solutions stations. For those who have an emergency or need to turn into lost this really is crucial.

2. A GPS method is one more essential piece of boat electronics your boat need to have. One of many much more popular selections is for a multifunction show that puts many diverse instruments onto a single screen. Such multifunction machines can even enable you to run radar and fishfinder data through one particular show. They may be also reasonably easy to expand for other functions and displays.

Motorized Paddle Patent

One of the more bizarre paddle ideas I've come across is this interesting concept of fitting a functional motorized propeller into the paddle blade. I came across this weird concept in Graham Warren's book 100 Canoe Paddle Designs (original post HERE).

Inventor George W Abraham filed for a US Patent on June 11, 1923. I recently found the whole writeup on Google's Patent search engine. Here is an excerpt of the inventor's application:

It consists essentially of a paddle blade of the type ordinarily used for canoe paddles, the blade being provided with a handle having a hand-grip of the type usual with canoe paddles, and the blade having at a considerable distance from its outer end an opening within which is mounted a small propeller, the shaft of which extends axially of the handle to an electric motor, the casing of which forms a portion of the handle.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a paddle of light weight capable of all the uses of an ordinary canoe paddle, but having in addition a propeller of such small size as to be capable of operation by a light weight motor of a type suitable for use with an ordinary storage battery of small size.
Another object of the invention is to provide a motor driven propeller for use with canoes in streams or the lagoons of parks or other places where the use of gas engines is prohibited.

Well the idea never really caught on I guess. But with canoeing slowly dying off in favour of other activities, perhaps a high powered motorized paddle would be just the ticket to get the masses of thrill seeking adrenaline-junkies into canoeing again.

1855 Penobscot Wedding Paddle

A great find currently up for bidding at Cowan Auctions. Lot 371 of their 9/25/2015 American Indian Auction features a mid-19th century Penobscot padde carved in cherry with decorations on both sides of the grip.

 ca. 1855 Penobscot Paddle
overall length 66.5 in.
Provenance: Collected from a Taylors Falls, Minnesota Estate

A closeup of the grip showcases many inscribed etchings including diamonds, double curves, and a very obvious heart image at the top. Below the heart, the initials F.M.D are carved in rectangular frame.

"Romantic" Heart etching with the initials "F.M.D'

This paddle even has some decorative etching around the throat of the paddle where the distinct blade spine merges with a subtly carved drip ring. It is simple but quite pretty ...

Decoration around throat and drip-ring

If the paddle shape looks familiar it is because its nearly identical mate  is curated at the Minnesota Historical Society - MHS (collection no. 7364). More posts about that paddle here and here.

MHS Society Paddle
77 inches length
6 1/2 inches width
collection no. 7364
Source Link

The collection history of the MHS paddle states that it was found on the battle site of "Battle Hollow", where a fight broke out between the Ojibwe and Dakota, thus dating it to no later than 1839. The initials W.D. were later carved on this  paddle by a William Daubney (1831-1871).

Cowan Auction's description of the other paddle mention that initials "F.M.D." reference his wife, Fannie Marie Daubney and that the second paddle was carved as a wedding present around 1855.  This explains the romantic heart etching.

A noted difference between the two paddles can be found in their overall lengths  - "W.D"'s paddle is 77 inches while F.M.D's is significantly shorter at 66.5 inches. These are both quite long compared to my preferred length of 58" for practical paddling. Fannie Marie's wedding paddle also features a longer grip area with a cascading base.

ca.1839 "W.D" vs ca.1855 "F.M.D" paddle

The auction is set for September 25, 2015 and the estimated price is between $800-$1000. I'll try to report back on the final sale price once the bidding is over.

September 26, 2015 Update: Fanny Marie's wedding paddle went for $5400 USD - over 5x the upper estimate. No word on the purchaser but hopefully it'll be well appreciated and perhaps put on public display somewhere.

Luke McNair Larch Split Paddle Canoe Build

Luke McNair has been very busy with some fantastic canoe and paddle related projects (previous posts of Luke's wonderful carvings can be read here and here). He recently sent me a progress update along with some photos.  They include a shot of him hard at work splitting a log of Larch with a hand-carved maul and some wedges.

Out of this log, a beautiful paddle was carved by axe and crooked knife. He has become most proficient with these woodworking tools.

In addition to this, Luke has been very busy building a Wabanaki style canoe, but using canvas as a substitute for birch bark. His facebook page has some great pictures of the build process so far. I'm not on Facebook but was able to log in using my wife's account and copied some of the photos here. Most impressive is that he is able to build this thing inside his home! After I built my 3ft bark model on our dining room table over the spring of 2008, my wife made me promise NEVER to carve inside the house again or ELSE! I listened and the marriage has survived. Here are some photos of Luke's inspirational build...

Canvas attached to the hull

Some readers might also recall another builder in the UK, Elspeth Soper, was also building a canoe using this method (documented in Garth Taylor's 1980 book Canoe construction in a Cree cultural tradition). A visit to her blog has revealed that the Cree style canoe is also finally done - congratulations! Here is an exciting shot of Luke descending down a rapid in Elspeth's canoe...

Very much looking forward to more updates and eventually witnessing Luke's canoe on the water..

Historic Paddle Illustration National Maritime Museum Mikmaq paddle

The  National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London has an historic illustration in its collection that might be relevant to those with an interest in traditional paddle designs.

Dated to 1750, it is thought to be the earliest accurate representation of a Mi'kmaq birchbark canoe. Included in the scale drawing is a pole gripped paddle with recurved shoulders and a pointed tip.

Object ID ZAZ7337
Description Scale 1:19.2.
A plan showing the body plan, sheer lines, and longitudinal plan for an 18ft bark canoe brought back to England for Lord Anson by Captain Henry Barnsley of HMS America (1749), in November 1750. The plan includes the outline of one of the paddles.
Date made 1750
Credit National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

Additional information on the backstory of this remarkable illustration is provided by an excerpt from Adney & Chappelle.
"The early English settlers of New England and New York were acquainted with the canoe forms of eastern Indians such as the Micmac, Malecite, Abnaki, and the Iroquois. Surviving records, however, show no detailed description of these canoes by an English writer and no illustration until about 1750. At this time a bark canoe, apparently Micmac, was brought from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to England and delivered to Lord Anson who had it placed in the Boat House of the Chatham Dockyard. There it was measured and a scale drawing was made by Admiralty draftsmen; the drawing is now in the Admiralty Collection of Draughts, in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. A redrawing of this plan appears opposite. It probably represents a war canoe, since a narrow, sharp-ended canoe is shown. The bottom, neither flat nor fully round, is a rounded V-shape; this may indicate a canoe intended for coastal waters. Other drawings, of a later date, showing crude plans of canoes, exist in Europe but none yet found appear as carefully drawn as the Admiralty plan, a scale drawing, which seems to be both the earliest and the most accurate 18th-century representation of a tribal type of American Indian bark canoe."
Bark Canoes and Skin Boats of North America, p12

Adney documented that Mi'kmaq and other Wabanaki canoes were well known for their elaborate ornamentation of winter bark. Shame that that the original Admiralty draftsmen didn't document if any such decoration existed on the canoe or the paddle, but that's not surprising since their obvious purpose would've been documented the lines of the hull.

For anyone interested in recreating this unique paddle shape, offsets for this paddle design can be found in Graham Warren's 100 Canoe Paddle Designs book.

Historic Illustration Champlain Paddle Picture

Here's another image of the paddle featured in The voyages and explorations of Samuel de Champlain, 1604-1616. It contains one of the earliest recorded images of a North American paddle. Figure B illustrates a woman holding onto a child with one hand while grasping chevron decorated paddle with the other.

As far as I can tell, it is one of the oldest images that features the chevron theme I've been consistently seeing in historic paddle art. One must wonder if future artists simply used Champlain's imagery to perpetuate this decorative feature or if it really was as abundant as it seems in art today. I'm still searching for surviving museum paddles with this theme but have yet to come across one.

For more editions of this image, including a colour version from another text, check out an earlier post on Champlain here.
