An update from Alec Jordan on the Ayles skiff

This came in yesterday and after I had posted on the Ayles skiff the day before, so please now read Alecs updated story. The pictures are from the Skiff World Championships at Ullapool 2013.

Roy

Hi Roy

Thanks for putting this up.

First point – the pic at the top of the two man boat is the Wemyss Skiff.  Attached are a couple of new pics from Skiffy Worlds to replace it.

The text below is now slightly dated – please replace with what is below.

Ullapool Harbour, Scotland.

Thank you for showing an interest in the St Ayles skiff. Your life may be about to change, hopefully for the better, as you discover the joys of boat building and being on the water as part of a community.
Those of us who were involved in 2009, at the start of what was then the “Scottish Coastal Rowing Project”, under the auspices of the Scottish Fisheries Museum, had a pretty good idea that building and rowing the newly designed St Ayles Skiff would be a very rewarding and sociable experience. We knew friends in our own community and some in neighbouring areas might well catch on and get an enthusiasm for the concept too. However, we have been somewhat taken aback by the speed at which the fever spread, not just around the Firth of Forth, which we might have expected, but initially along the coasts of Scotland, then down into some lovely parts of England, and then around the world.

Therefore, it is worthwhile trying to look at what is so special about this boat, and the way it brings communities together.

Perhaps most importantly, the St Ayles is not something you just buy off the shelf. It is supplied in a kit form, which means that the basic hull shape and dimensions will be the same for each boat. However, a great deal of work goes into transforming sheets of precut plywood parts into the graceful shape of a St Ayles skiff. It’s that work which is enormously rewarding, and can be done by you, in your community, with your friends, some of whom you will know already and some of
whom you have yet to meet, but all of whom you will have a special bond with. You and your community will be very proud of what you create, and it will have touches which make it unique.

Then you and others will start to row your community skiff. Many of the rowers will have lived beside the sea for years, but never looked at their community from seaward before. Just as you discovered the rewards of teamwork when building the boat, rowers will discover the joys of teamwork in making the boat sweep gracefully through the water, and making her ride purposefully over the waves. During the build some experienced woodworkers will have shared their knowledge with learners, a rewarding experience for both. Now on the water the same thing will happen, with experienced rowers and mariners sharing their experience with newcomers. Some of those newcomers will be youngsters, some will be pensioners, but all are discovering that joy of working together with others to achieve a goal.

Loch Broom, Scotland.
Apart from being pleasing on the eye, the St Ayles has proved time and again to be a superb seaboat.  They have been raced in everything up to Force 6  winds, and in three years of regattas, there have been no capsizes or injuries.  Their stability has been a big factor in bringing hundreds of people who have never enjoyed water based recreation into the sport, and while racing is a big part of rowing the St Ayles, there are a very large number of rowers who partake simply for the exercise and camaraderie of working closely together.

Coastal rowing is a very accessible sport. You do not need huge resources or specialist knowledge to become involved. All the rowers have a contribution to make to the propulsion of the boat, and all share the same rewards.
We recently welcomed 800 St Ayles skiff rowers from the USA, Australia, Netherlands, England and Scotland to the first St Ayles World Championships in Ullapool in Scotland’s Northwest Highlands.  The Worlds has attracted further interest from around the world as well as from Scotland; when the next Worlds is held in 3 or 4 years time, there will be many more countries represented – we hope that crews from Southern Africa will have discovered the joys of coastal rowing and will be present for it.

Alec Jordan & Robbie Wightman

Bravo, bravo to this idea, Hout Bay harbour and Hout Bay itself would be the perfect setting for a South African event!

Flemings jeans from Liverpool

Circa 1963 before and after, these well made jeans were sold close to Tysons Building Contractors of 5 Dryden Street where I worked and just off Scotland Road , Liverpool.

They can now be bought once again!

A Brief History of Flemings

The first and possibly the most credible name in jeanswear to come out of Merseyside. W H Fleming founded his clothier company in the Scotland road area of Liverpool in the year 1881. Eight years after Levi Strauss won the patent for riveted pants in the USA, W H Fleming had imported the idea and began manufacturing similar work- wear for the seamen of this fair port.

http://www.flemingsjeansliverpool.com/about.html

Size 34 will cost you just GBP30.00

Postage to RSA is only GBP14 so still less than you will pay for Levi's in the UK today?

http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mol/exhibitions/liverpoollives/william_henry_fleming.aspx

They offer a logo with the Liver Bird on the pocket or without it, also the name on the back of the jeans as we normally find.

A letter head and a note as a reference?

Dated 12 /01/1911, does 150 Scotland Road in Liverpool still exist, it was on the city end of the road and a lot of road re planning has taken place down there over the years.

The shop that Flemings opened further out of the city can be seen here, the Astoria  is the building on the left, the area is known as Walton Road. The date was in 1973.

My thanks to http://www.liverpoolpicturebook.com/2014/09/Picsoftheday.html   for the use of their picture.

There is a new brand logo now, is it new or a copy of the old one?

My thanks to the Liverpool Picture Book for posting the photos.

This one  was taken on Walton Road in 1973.

In case your wondering, I have no asscociation with Flemings and I have never owned a pair of their jeans, maybe one day?

An Endurance 37 back from Brasil

I have been fortunate enough to own not one but two Endurance 37 yachts. Both went transatlantic and with myself as an owner/ builder / skipper status.

I was fortunate to have some of the best crew possible on each trip.

On Ocean Planet the trip  was back from Rio Do Janerio to Cape Town and with my good friend Alex Notman (notty) as the only crew, we came back in thirty two days, not bad really, twenty nine was very possible until we had a South Easter gale, we ended up in Saldahna on that trip.

Ocean Planet started with a bare hull and at a cost of R4500, the cockpit cost another R920 and both options were worth every cent.

Then some years later and after we had sold Ocean Planet, I bought another Endurance 37 and for a similar amount of money, being R5000, that purchase had a catch though.

Gulliver of Knysna was wrecked off the coast near Slangkop lighthouse, on its way to Cape Town and from Knysna.

I bought the wreck, stripped by another who bought her from the yachts insurance company, all I got this time was the hull and deck with a big hole in it.

The yacht was bought at a place further out and in the surf than it is in my picture, the risk to me  was great and as I now owned the wreck, the liability to move it had become mine.

I hired a man named Dennis Gentry of Tandem Rigging, he and his crew camped on the high ground and near where I was standing to take the picture. Dennis was there about five days and almost gave up but in the end he managed to drag the wreck up the rocks and load it onto a large low bed trailer.

We then took the trailer and wreck up and over Chapmans Peak Drive, that is no longer possible and even back then it was tight on the many corners.

Ocean Cloud as I renamed the boat and back from Trinidad and Brasil, Simone and her then boy friend Nigel sailed her back double handed.

The trailer and boat were directed to my home in Hout Bay, there the cradle and boat were set down in our front garden. We then had quite a good party, the guys from Tandem Rigging  had really earned their drinks and snacks.

Some fifty one weeks later I re launched the boat and in Hout Bay Harbour, a year or so later we sailed off to Brasil, my friend Notty was again with me, so was his daughter Simone and anther good friend John Holmes.

From the Splendid Galley Spam Spam Bacon Bacon Jam and Spam App

The pressure is on. You've been invited to the big party on the yacht again and the painful memory of your last appetizer effort still lingers. The haunting vision of your tofu stuffed cucumbers accompanied by an organic plain yogurt dipping sauce languishing untouched on the fantail still sears your retinas. Never again you swear.

The Rant's culinary experts have the perfect solution for you. Fried jalapeno Spam sticks served in bacon bowls with a bacon jam dipping sauce. Spicy, tasty, and always an epicurean favorite. This dish will surely be the centerpiece of the party's conversations. Just one look at those glistening Spam sticks will make you want to sample it again and again.

This eye popping appetizer is easy to make and the ingredients are already in most galleys. It just takes three simple steps to achieve porcine culinary nirvana.

First we make some bacon bowls, Then we need a can of Spam. One of my favorites is the jalapeno flavored Spam. We will then make some bacon jam for dipping using a very special recipe.

You don't need a "As seen on TV" product to make bacon bowls. Some tin foil and a muffin tin works just fine. Flip a muffin tin upside down and take a piece of tin foil and mold it over one of the forms. Do a good job of making it smooth. Then spray on some some Pam, or use cooking oil and a paper towel to apply it to the tin foil.

Grab your scissors and get some of that yummy bacon ready. Measure and cut a strip of bacon and lay it from one side to the other over the form. Repeat until it's covered. It will take three or four strips to do this depending on the size of the bowl.

Now take a long bacon strip and wrap it around the base. Where this piece overlaps take the foil and bend it up to pin the end against the form. Throw this into a 350 degree oven on a cookie sheet (you will want to save that delicious bacon grease) for about 20 minutes checking them on occasion. You don't want to cook the bowls too fast or the bacon will do wonky shrinky things.

When done remove the bowl with the foil from the muffin pan, let cool for a couple of minutes and then remove the foil carefully from the inside. You have just made a mouth watering sculptural bacon masterpiece ready to be filled with morsels of your choice.

Spam is a quintessentially and ubiquitous American food. It's been around since 1937 and over 7 billions cans have been sold. Despite its undeserved reputation as being a mystery meat it's just pork shoulder and ham extruded into a can. Think of it as a square hotdog like product in a can with fewer and better ingredients.

I'll admit that a couple of times a year I buy a can and cook it up while listening as Don Ho croons "Tiny Bubbles." My mother would cook up plain original Spam with fried eggs and it always tastes the way I remember it from my childhood. Today I prefer the more piquant jalapeno and tabasco flavored versions, but enough about my less than halcyon youth.

Think meaty french fries. Slice the Spam and cut the slices again about 3/8" square give or take. You can fry or bake them. The idea is to have them firm enough to eat as a finger food. You can use the leftover grease from making the bacon bowls for some extra porky frying flavor if you wish.

I can't say enough about the miracle that is bacon jam. This is Caity Prunka's recipe. She and her partner Ryan Sullivan are the proprietors of Bondurants restaurant and bar in New York City.

I first tasted this Caity one of a kind creation at thanksgiving dinner, and have lusted after it ever since.

Caity's Bourbon Bacon Jam
1lb of smoked thick cut bacon chopped
2 large shallots diced
1 whole sprig of thyme or rosemary
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/3 cup of bourbon
Fresh ground black pepper

Saute chopped bacon until soft and the fat has rendered.
Add herbs and shallots to thinly cover the pan and continue to cook. (you don't want the bacon to get crunchy, just well cooked. Pour off half of the bacon fat and reserve because bacon fat is awesome.
Add brown sugar, reduce until it becomes sticky.
Add bourbon to deglaze (do not flambe).
Continue to cook until the bacon is crispy, but not crumbly.
Let cool, and blend to the desired consistency.
Spread it on almost anything and enjoy.

The presentation is simple. Place the Spam sticks in the bacon bowls, garnish with something green, and serve it with the bacon jam. This is finger food manna from heaven. The tangy fried Spam harmonizes beautifully with the sweet bourbon flavored bacon jam. Bring this app to the yacht party next year and I'll guarantee the guests will talk about it for years to come.

Hmmm, it seems my cardiologist and friend, the most esteemed Dr. Dave requests that I provide some actual nutritional information about this appetizer he is not very health-wise enthused about. We have this type of conversation on occasion which mostly consists of me attempting to negotiate just how big those two daily glasses of red wine can be, and if they can be filled with that brown Kentucky wine.

Mix this with tasty eclectic pub fare with a touch of southern flare at modest prices and you have a winner, and it is.

Dr. David Schreibman beyond being a skilled and avid boater (He and his wife are basis for the Ted and Alice characters I used in a much earlier story) Dr. Dave is an extraordinary cardiologist, and I can personally attest to his expertise. You would be hard pressed to find someone with better professional skills anywhere. He also has a great sense of humor as his appearance in this piece indicates. Now about that brown wine again Dr. Dave, just two glasses?

For a change the guys on the ground are really helping the cruising yachts, this is on the island of
Rodrigues and well done to them too!

Cyclone Imelda will be over us sometime this afternoon, early evening. The rain, and wind especially is building up quite steadily.

With the fantastic help from the Port Captain and his 2nd in command, The ROAD and Shayele are as secure as possible - we all worked for 2 hours in the rain this morning putting more lines out, supplied by the Port Authorities. We have never experienced - anywhere in our travels - such friendly, helpful and willing people.

24V from 12V

This is a traditional problem that typically has very dangerous and expensive switching. Typically it is done with a second battery that is kept in parallel with your 12 volt starting or house battery for charging, but is switched in series with that battery to run the 24 volt item - bow thruster, winch etc. This is expensive and dangerous. You have to use two very heavy duty switches, one to switch the negative of the additional battery from the -12 to the + 12 of the starting battery, and the other to disconnect the +12 of the additional battery from the starting battery.
BUT THE TIMING IS CRITICAL. If one switch is operated before the other you will end up shorting a battery and cause an explosion.

So here is how to do it the safe way using only a single pole single throw switch.

In the circuit diagram, you will see that the auxilliary battery is connected in parallel to the 12 volt battery through a pair of headlamps, one in the positive lead and one in the negative. With the "24 VOLT" switch open, the charge on the additional battery will be the same as the 12 volt starting battery because the headlamps, which carry a couple of amps when lit, will trickle charge the additional battery to the full voltage. Under normal circumstances, the headlamps will only have a fraction of a volt across them so except under heavy charging/discharging conditions they will stay off or have a very dim glow. 24VoltBattery.jpg - 38428 Bytes
There will be 12 volts going to the 24 volt load when the switch is in the 12 volt position but since the headlamps are in series with the circuit, if the bow thruster were turned on, only a couple of amps would flow and the headlamps would light. When you close the 24 volt switch, the batteries are now in series and 24 volts is available for the bow thruster. While in the 24 volt mode, a couple of amps will flow through each headlamp and they will come on full brilliance. The amount of energy wasted, however, is small compared to the battery capacity and the few amps through them does not materially diminish the high current available for the thruster.

COMPONENT SELECTION

The BATTERY capacity of the auxiliary will be a function of how long you think you will need the bow thruster in one session, and how often sessions will occur. Refer to the bow thruster current requirements to determine this figure. For example, if the bow thruster draws 50 amps (about 1.5 horsepower) and you need to be able to run it for up to 30 minutes, that comes to 50 x 0.5hr = 25 amp hours. You should double this figure to provide a safety factor and reduce cycling the battery below the 50% charge level. So a 100 amp-hour automobile battery for about $35 would be ideal. You should match the chemistry of the battery to that of the starting battery - don't mix an AGM or GELL battery with a WET lead acid. Otherwise the batteries can be of different ages, manufacturers or style. You don't need a deep cycle battery here - the usage is more like that of a starter motor battery in an automobile.
Charging time after a typical use can be calculated by dividing the amp-hours used, say 25 in a 30 minute period, by the charging current, say 4 amps = 6 hours, or 12 times the discharge time.
The HEADLAMPS should usually be the highest wattage you can find. In fact I use a high/low beam headlamp and wire the high and low terminals together so both filaments are in parallel. The high temperature will reduce life but since they are only going to be on for a few minutes a day maximum, who cares? A major advantage of using headlamps to limit the current is that the resistance is non linear. As they cool down the resistance goes down dramatically and they tend to draw a constant current for charging even though they are not brightly lit. You should consider placing the headlamps so the light is visible from the bow thruster control panel location so you don't forget to switch back to CHARGING when the bow thruster is no longer needed, otherwise the headlamps will eventually discharge the auxiliary battery.
The SWITCH should be sized for the maximum current of the bow thruster plus a safety margin. For an economical installation, a simple battery disconnect switch is ideal. If you want a remote control, then you should use a simple single pole, normally open relay instead of the switch. We have a 130 amp relay in our Parts and Kits catalog that will handle many thrusters.
The CABLES should be sized as recommended by the bow thruster manufacturer with regard to the length of the run. Note that only the cables to the switch have to be this size. The cables to the headlamps only have to carry a few amps so a 12 or 14 gauge wire would be adequate.
