That old Seagull engine you have can it be fixed when its seized solid
This was one of two requests for Seagull information and on the same day.
Dear Roy, Stubbornly I cling to this old British Seagull Motor I have which does not work. The most likely explanation is that the magnets for generating a spark are too worn. But we don't know that. I could not figure out how to take the top off in order to get at the magnet.

That is easy, just place your hand over the air intake.
The engine number dates this as a 1975 forty plus motor and with a 2 to 3 HP output.
This motor is in fine condition for its age. The forty plus will run on a 20:1 fuel petrol mix, you may need a new carburettor needle to be able to do this.
How do you stop a Seagull? just place your hand over the air intake.
How easy is that!

Please do not take the flywheel off, this is not recomended, you can take the top cover to service the points though.
The points and spark plug gaps are important of course, so start with them, if there is no spark at all, try a power drill to the
Flywheel and spin it up, this will normally re generate a magnet and thats it done?

The other Seagull engine was brought to me for a look over, all in all it was a very good buy and with just one part missing, which was the plastic bracket that holds the rear drive tube in place, this needs to be there!
I advised the new owner to take the parts of like fuel pipe and carb, clean them and the fuel tank, plus the two in line filters before trying to start it. Have uploaded a video showing how to free up a seized seagull 40 motor, along with stripping down and replacing other parts. Hope this is of use to someone. Please feel free to share it as I am sure it will encourage more people to buy more spares and save a few more from the scrap heap.

Please be careful using a blow lamp, lump hammer and an impact tool!

Its coming
It is gray and breezy and the lake beckons as a place where the thoughts that fight for space in my mind can find room to leave, or rearrange themselves.
Enough coots are now on the lake that I can say that there is a flock, although many more are to come. The ones that are here are barely enough to keep the bald eagles fed during the coming winter. A male wood duck shows that the ducks have now regained their colors and I look forward to the many migratory ducks that will come to the bay.
To my left, a bee moves in and out of the last of the lily blossoms. Soon the lilies will brown and sink away and soon I will be able to paddle up close to the cattails.A homeless guy who has been living out of his rowboat eases up. We talk and talk and talk. He does much the same down here as I do, he watches nature. He eats a lot of fish, which I don't do. While we chat, a great blue heron catches a large bluegill. It takes a few seconds for the bird to get its head back out of the water. The fish is a bit bigger than my hand. It takes a few minutes for the heron to kill or stun the fish, then it takes a couple more to maneuver it into its mouth, at which point it looks ridiculously large, but it goes in, and from 70 yards away we can see it pass down the throat. Amazing.

Its not about boats but I found this interesting and a bit creepy
The oven buzzer went off, and Kate froze the DVR, and this is what was on the screen. This image was inserted several times in an American Idol commercial that was aired in the middle of a Glee episode that played on May 10 at 8:00 pm. I stepped through the commercial with the DVR in slow motion and took some pics of the many images. The funny thing about the images was they had already appeared twice at that time, and we hadn't consciously seen them. But when you know it is there, you can see it very briefly flash.
There were other images, like the one below also embedded in the commercial. I'm not a black helicopter guy by any means, but it does seem a bit creepy to me that the commercial was using subliminal message images.
Does it work, or is it legal or ethical? I don't know, but I think I'm going to stop watching these shows. Missing them won't change my life one iota. I have a pile of good books to read, and many stories to finish.
