How to build a Proteus 106 kit set catamaran by CKD Boats cc
Barry is showing us how and has kept a log of the hours spent this far, progress has been swift and he and his assistant look to have made a fine job of the assembly.

The central wing deck was assembled upside down and between the two hulls.

This was before the stiffeners and filler application.
Words from Barry the builder:
Hello Angelo

Barry has added the two central conduits, a great idea and can be used for a number of uses.

This has been the progress since about May this year, fast building and with just two men doing the work.

Words from Barry the builder:
Hello Angelo
I’m afraid progress has slowed down a bit - my cattle man has left the farm, and therefore my boat building assistant has to do the cattle work as well. I too, have had some other commitments in the last month.
Nevertheless, the wing deck has now been faired, and yesterday we lifted it into position and started glassing the joints. The fit was almost perfect with only minor adjustments required - this reflects the benefit of the CNC kit which is hugely time saving. I have attached some pictures. You will notice that I glassed in two 40mm PCV tubes along the middle wing deck stiffener to act as conduits for wiring and fuel lines (I plan to store fuel in the forward ventilated lockers). You will also notice that the two outside stiffeners have been left off and will be fitted when the taping to the hull on the outside has been finished.

The Proteus 106 catamaran kit is now cheaper
Checking back on old mails and finding the prices to a kit on the Proteus 106 catamaran and around six years back when it was U$24,000 or so I now find that with the Rands devaluation the same kit will probably now cost you U$20,000, so a saving of U$4000 at the exchange rate today.

There was a plans fee increase, but far less than the saving mentioned above.

There is also a Proteus 106 kit under construction here in Cape Town, I spoke to the owner yesterday and he has offered to supply pictures and details of his build.

The picture is of a Proteus 106 build in Thailand, the transoms have been extended on this boat.

Barrys Proteus 106 build
Barry took delivery of his Proteus 106 kit last May, he has made great progress since then.

The fact he has a suitable covered space is a bonus, he has reached the stage where the cabin roof will be constructed.

He also fabricated his own forward cross beam, it looks good to me.

Sailing on the Proteus 106 catamaran
One picture that says it all?

Rick had his Proteus 106 built for him, he is a professional sailor and knew what he wanted and expected. The reports that came back from Rick on the sailing ability o/f the Proteus 106 were good.

Proteus 106 CNC cut panels
These are just three of some 120 panels that go to make the Proteus 106 catamaran kit. This one is special to South Africa as it will be assembled on the east coast and we will soon have a series of build pictures.

The order will be collected next week and will be transported to the build site for home construction.

Imagine setting this out by hand then cutting it out with an electric jig saw!

With spot on accuracy from the CNC machine and being repeatable we can make one designs time after time and once the first boat produced has been measured there will be little point in measuring those builds that follow?

Proteus 106 Sarita is afloat!
This is the first Proteus 106 to have been built as the designer wanted, the K.I.S.S rule applies to this boat.
My thanks to Barry, the boats owner / builder for supplying the pictures.

My thanks to Barry, the boats owner / builder for supplying the pictures.

The boat is named Sarita.

She was launched recently and in South Africa.

A basic roof over your build is great idea.

My thanks to Justin of the SA Yacht Blog for resizing the images.

Please copy and paste, open and read more about this very affordable design.
The builder reported that the kit worked and that the panels fitted.
How hard can this be?
Try one and see for yourself?
Prices, basic CNC cut okoume marine ply and removable staions, allow R180,000 which is around U$13,000 ( prices to material and rate of exchange pending)
The plans are NZ$4500 and supplied direct from Lavranos Design.
