Pioneer Class Design 508

This is an interesting design for a number of reasons. First this boat was designed by and for Gilbert Wyland, our chief engineer for many, many years. It was a project that was concieved just prior to the end of World War II, and Gil was thinking about a stock production boat to be built in aluminum.

Aluminum had come very much to the forefront as a valid boat building material and Wyland, being an engineer, was well aware of just how suitable a material it was. At the same time Irving Jakobson of the Jakobson Shipyard Yard of Oyster Bay had come to the very same realization.

Three boats were built to this design: Nugget, Temperance and Wind Call for Wyland. These boats were riveted but used an internal backup seam so that the external plating would be flush. The outside of the plating was drilled to allow the rivet head to be countersunk. Decks were of plywood.
